The Women as Global Leaders Community is a part of and sponsored by the new Missouri S&T Women's Leadership Institute (WLI). In conjunction with this living/learning community, the Women as Global Leaders Class will be a new strengths-based program designed for students who desire to excel, help others, and want to learn how to change the world for the better! No specific major is required. Through various activities such as reviewing female leadership theory and case studies, open discussions, self-assessments, out-of-classroom activities, writing assignments and guest speakers, students will learn what real-life leadership practices mean and how to apply these to their lives and careers.

The program will include an annual capstone public service project that would be directed and executed by the Women as Global Leaders student teams.

WLI students will be strongly encouraged to engage in activities that find ways to transfer technology and scientific knowledge to improve all areas of our society. The various experiences will help the students learn how make the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields more people-oriented and how a STEM based education can fulfill their broader occupational and personal goals.

Expectations for Women as Global Leaders Class:

Through various activities such as open discussions, self-assessments, out-of-classroom activities, writing assignments and guest speakers help students learn what real-life leadership practices mean and how to apply these to their lives and careers.

Goals:

• Provide each student with an assessment of current leadership skills (strengths/weaknesses) at the beginning and the end of the academic year.

• Learn about leadership styles and techniques in both historical and current perspectives.
• Plan a minimum of two local Service Learning Projects to be developed and executed during the fall or spring semester, and one Global Service Learning project to be executed during the spring semester.  [Opportunities to go on the global trip will be available.]
• Learn about Team-Based Leadership and build effective teams for the Service Learning Projects.
• Expose the students to female leadership role models.
